Does your team have the opportunity to practice communication in low-stakes environments? Like in school, it shouldn’t be reserved for a few. Build confidence and competence by giving everyone a chance to speak. And discover the ways our course can help you level up your team and leaders before the end of the year.
*******
My daughter, a junior in college, surprised me last week with news that she was taking public speaking. Not that she wanted to, but fortunately her degree requires it.
The only involvement I’ll have in this class is to make sure her tuition is paid. College can be hard enough without your speech-coach of a mom helicoptering in.
But it does elevate a question I’ve been asking since I sat through my son’s high school award and graduation ceremonies in the spring. Why are public speaking “jobs” in schools reserved for the valedictorians and student body leaders?
Generally, public speaking opportunities in high school and college are limited. This is unfortunate.
Becoming comfortable with speaking in front of groups requires practice, habits, feedback, and appreciating different genres and needs of audiences. And it can’t be limited to those that want to speak, like to speak, or are enrolled in debate.
I’ll share more on this later as we are collaborating with some teachers to imagine low-stakes ways to incorporate more chances to speak in everyday classes, not just called public speaking.
Build Communication Skills Across Your Team with Low-Stakes Opportunities
This shift makes a strong case for communication training at all levels—not just for the few who naturally excel.
The question for business leaders is: Where are you giving your newer and younger team members the chance to stand up and speak in low-stakes environments? Like in school, we often reserve speaking opportunities for our workplace “superstars,” but communication, like any other skill, improves with practice.
Think about your organization’s or team’s upcoming schedule—staff meetings, client reviews, and project briefings. Are there moments where you can invite less-experienced team members to practice speaking? These are the “non-stakes” opportunities that build confidence and competence.
